The name Opitas is more than just a brand—it’s a tribute to our roots. In Colombia, “Opitas” refers to the people of Huila, a region known for its rich culture, resilience, and deep connection to the land. The word stems from “Opa,”once a common greeting, later becoming a symbol of independence and identity for the people of Huila.
Though our family has been cultivating coffee in Huila for generations, the name Opitas Coffee was born in Australia as a way to represent our Colombian heritage and share our story with the world. By choosing this name, we honor the traditions, dedication, and passion that have been passed down through five generations of coffee growers. At Opitas Coffee, every cup carries the spirit of Huila, Colombia—a legacy of quality, culture, and tradition that we are proud to share with you.
Our Story
At Opitas Coffee, we are a family-owned and operated business with over 150 years of experience in cultivating specialty coffee in the lush mountains of Southwest Huila, Colombia. As fifth-generation coffee farmers, we oversee every step of the process—from seed to cup—ensuring exceptional quality and consistency without intermediaries.
Our journey is one of hard work, resilience, and passion. From our early days learning coffee farming from our grandparents to experiencing the third wave of coffee outside of Colombia, we have been inspired by specialty coffee innovations from around the world. This exposure allowed us to refine our craft, gain expertise in coffee roasting, and deepen our appreciation for the art of coffee.
Today, we continue our family’s legacy, not just as coffee growers but also as roasters, ensuring that each batch reflects the bold, vibrant flavors of Huila. Every bean we produce carries the essence of tradition, innovation, and a deep love for coffee.

Our Journey
Our story began in 1840 with our ancestors, who established our family's presence in Caloto, Huila. Over the generations, we've honoured the knowledge passed down from our forebears, combining it with cutting-edge technology and innovation to grow, process, and export our beans worldwide. Despite challenges like crop infestations and economic hardships, our passion for coffee never waned.
In 2009, a joint effort brought together Diego, Gonzalo, Edisson, and Juan, all living in Australia and working tirelessly saving to purchase the family farm from our grandfather. Meanwhile, in Colombia, the rest of our family, primarily Norma and her husband Gabriel, were preparing the land and germinating thousands of coffee trees for what would become our new specialty coffee plantation at La Palma.
Inspired by the specialty coffee movement, we revitalized our coffee operations, focusing on quality, sustainability, and direct trade partnerships. Today, our team of master cuppers, food engineers, agronomists, and visionaries continues to innovate, ensuring that every cup of Opita's Coffee tells the story of our enduring legacy and commitment to excellence.
